A tiny piglet has bizarrely been unveiled as the President of Costa Rica’s new official pet.

Luis Guillermo Solis was given the adorable black and pink animal - called “Daniela” - by a young girl last Tuesday.

Valentina Zúñiga was with farmers who’d visited the President to campaign for the protection of local production.

“I don’t know if any other country has a piglet as (it’s official) pet,” Solis said on being given the 12-day-old critter.

“But if Obama has dogs and a turkey, then I can have a piglet,” he told reporters who’d asked about the future of the animal.

“It will be the first pet of the Republic,” El Nuevo Herald reports him as adding.

The piglet was returned to its mother so it could continue feeding, but will rejoin the President, once it is large enough, in the near future.

Solis said he was “honoured” with the gift, who has become something of a star in Costa Rica.

Memes showing her sat alongside Solis as he goes about his daily business have gone viral in recent days.
