Jared Leto's Morbius, the Living Vampire movie is eyeing up Adria Arjona for the female lead.

The project is the next step in Sony's Marvel universe, which began with this year's Tom Hardy vehicle, Venom, and production is scheduled to kick off in early 2019.

Per Deadline, Arjona is in talks to portray Martine, a character in the original comics who's engaged to Dr. Michael Morbius – a renowned biochemist whose experimental blood tampering sees him transform into the human-feasting anti-hero of the film's title.

Martine becomes a potential victim to Morbius' blood cravings, as he grapples with bat-like symptoms and an unnatural new lifestyle.

The actress made TV history as the first bilingual and Latina Dorothy in NBC's Oz series Emerald City, but it's her film work that audiences will probably recognise her from.

Arjona most recently appeared in Pacific Rim: Uprising and Melissa McCarthy's Life of the Party. She's also got a line of exciting releases to come, with two Netflix movies – Triple Frontier and Six Underground – yet to hit screens.

Morbius producer Avi Arad has previously discussed his excitement at having an actor with Leto's pedigree involved with the movie.

"This is the great thing for us now, that an actor like him, and an actor like Tom [Hardy] wanted to have their own character. But the character they love. Both of them, very hard to get them to do a movie. You actually cannot get them," he said.

"We went in, we sat with them, and everybody told us, 'Oh, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.' Nothing. That's what he wanted to do."
