It was quite the scene for amused onlookers as the actor Adrian Edmondson had to be rescued by fire crews after trapping himself outdoors while attempting to clean his windows.

The 64-year-old comedian was photographed stuck on a ledge pleading for help from passers-by.

Fortunately, his cries were heard by Duncan Cumming, 46, who phoned the fire brigade to come to the rescue on Sunday afternoon.

The comedian later shared his ordeal on social media and said a small crowd had gathered to watch the drama unfold.

Edmondson, who is famous for his roles in hits including The Young Ones and Bottom, wrote: "Just trapped myself on a window ledge whilst cleaning the windows.

"Had to ask passerby to fetch help. Fire Brigade came. Small crowd gathered - thoroughly enjoying themselves.

"Fire brigade very kind and didn't snigger too much as they rescued me. How's your Bank Holiday?"

The TV star own homes in Chagford, Devon, and in London with his wife and fellow comedian Jennifer Saunders.

A picture taken by Mr Cumming reveals the moment the actor realised he was trapped on the roof of his London home.

Mr Cumming said he was out for a stroll when he spotted the bizarre situation and recognised Edmondson from the television.

He said: "I saw someone on the roof and thought it looked risky - but when I got closer I knew who it was.

"He shouted to me that he was locked out and asked if I would phone for the fire brigade, which of course I did.

"I left once I knew he was ok, but it's not what you see every day.

"Occasionally in London, you do see famous people out and about - just not usually on a window ledge."
