A popular Kennington adventure playground has reopened its gates following a major £700,000 renovation project, providing local children with a modern and fully accessible play space.

Fredericks Adventure Playground was shut off in late 2019 after the council discovered asbestos below the soil and it deteriorated.

Now it has been completely transformed into a state-of-the-art facility designed for children aged 8-14 and their families. The playground now features modern play structures and specially designed accessible equipment, set within newly landscaped recreational areas. The revamped park has modern climbing frames, accessible equipment, and landscaped play areas

The ambitious redevelopment project was shaped by extensive community consultation, Southwark Council said, with local residents playing a key role in determining the final design. Specialist firm Erect Architecture was commissioned to create the space which they say prioritises fun, exploration, and inclusivity for all users.

Councillor Portia Mwangangye, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools, and Families said: "Fredericks Playground is a great example of our commitment to investing in playgrounds on estates. These spaces help bring communities together while inspiring our children to explore, play, and grow. This transformation ensures that all children, regardless of ability, have a place to feel included and have fun."

The playground is now open and welcoming local families, offering a safe and inclusive space for children of all abilities to play and socialise. Residents interested in visiting the newly renovated playground can find it at Westcott Rd, London SE17 3QY.
