As Christmas approaches, East Riding of Yorkshire Council is stressing the importance of responsible pet ownership and purchasing.

This festive season is often a time when many choose to get a new pet, but it's crucial to acknowledge the long-term responsibility that comes with caring for an animal. The council is urging residents to consider whether they are ready and able to take on such responsibilities before bringing a pet home.

To ensure animal welfare standards are maintained, it's also vital to buy pets only from licensed breeders or rescue shelters. All business premises—including those at residential properties—must have a licence to sell pets and breed dogs for sale.

It is recommended to verify licensing details on the council's website or to request proof when visiting a premises. Should any concerns arise about a breeder, the advice is clear: walk away and do not feel pressured into buying.

Owing to the current high demand, responsible breeders may already have waiting lists for dogs and cats. Nonetheless, it is essential to buy only healthy animals raised in optimal welfare conditions.

Councillor Lyn Healing, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Many people purchase pets in the run up to Christmas, but it is important to make sure they can be properly looked after the holiday period ends.

"It is also essential to only buy pets from registered breeders, to make sure that the animals are healthy and well-treated. Our licensing team are dedicated to upholding animal welfare standards, and I encourage residents to report any concerns about irresponsible or unregistered animal breeding."
