At least 30% of A&E patients at the Queen's Hospital in Romford, (part of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust) waited at least 12 hours.

New data from NHS England have revealed there are six hospital trusts where one in five patients experienced A&E waiting times of over 12 hours.

The two hospitals run by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust saw the worst numbers, with 33.1% of people waiting more than 12 hours in A&E, while 25.1% of A&E patients of the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust were faced with the same gruelling wait.

In the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, 24.7% if patients waited more than 12 hours in A&E, and 24.4% of patients in the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

Overall, the provisional data show that an average of 10% of patients across England waited more than 12 hours for care in A&E - as NHS England said it had seen the busiest winter on record for A&E services.

It is the first time NHS England has shared data about A&E wait times that exceed 12 hours, following pressure from emergency medical staff to make the numbers public.

Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) welcomed the change, which it had previously pushed for, suggesting the numbers reflected staff and bed shortages across the system.

“As the data show, there are large numbers of patients waiting 12 hours from their time of arrival,” college president Dr Adrian Boyle told The Guardian. “Now we must get to work and reduce these dangerous delays and overcrowding in emergency departments, which we know are harmful to patients.”

Medical staff across the country have long complained that their pay and working conditions have led to colleagues leaving the profession, contributing to the staff shortages that have plagued the NHS of late.

A 2022 report by MPs highlighted a shortage of more than 12,000 doctors and 50,000 nurses across the NHS, while nurses and junior doctors have recently taken strike over pay and working conditions.
