Aerial Footage Captures Fair-Weather Waterspout Off Miami Coast

Footage by a meteorologist on a training flight shows a waterspout off the coast of Miami, Florida, on May 30.

Lieut Philip Manougian, an operations manager with the National Hurricane Center, spotted the fair-weather waterspout above the blue water of Biscayne Bay, near Soldier Key.

Manougian told Storyful that such types of waterspouts are “common in mornings along with the Florida Keys and Southern Florida coasts.” However, this was his first time seeing one from the air.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s website, fair-weather waterspouts “usually form along the dark flat base of a line of developing cumulus clouds” and typically “dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, and rarely penetrate far inland.” Credit: Phil Manougian via Storyful
