Aerial Footage Shows Lava From Kilauea Volcano Flowing Into Crater Lake

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted late on Sunday, December 20, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park said.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said lava flowed into the Halema’uma’u crater following the explosion, evaporating the lake there.

They shared this footage showing lava continuing to flow into the crater on Monday morning.

According to local media, the USGS said the lava was “completely contained” in the roughly 1,640-foot-deep crater so it did not pose a direct hazard to the public. Credit: USGS Volcanoes via Storyful
