Ruth Wilson is adamant that she was paid less than Dominic West in The Affair – and says such conversations about pay equality and parity should be openly discussed.

The 36-year-old actress won a Golden Globe for her affecting performance as 'the other woman' and bereaved mother Alison Bailey in the hit Showtime drama. But even after her award success and critical acclaim, Wilson is certain she wasn't paid the same as co-star West.

"I definitely get less money than a male in my situation would. Definitely," the star told Radio Times.

"Yeah [I think I was paid less than West] I think so. Certainly when I signed up to that project, I would have got paid less. Then they [the producers] might argue, 'Well, he's already done a major American TV show [The Wire] so he's already got a level.'

"But even after a Golden Globe I'm not going to be on parity," she continued. "So he definitely gets more than me. I mean, I don't know what the figure is, but I'm sure he does."

Wilson said that she hadn't spoken to West about equal pay, but stressed the importance of men getting involved in the discussion in order to help women achieve pay parity.

"It's sort of funny," she continued. "It's quite hard to bring that up in a way. But it needs to be an open discussion and men need to help us out. I don't want more money, I just want equal money. Which means men have to take less."

The Luther star showed her support and solidarity to Time's Up by wearing all-black and a Time's Up pin on the red carpet at the BAFTAs. The initiative aims to combat sexual harassment and abuse in all workplaces.

Wilson will reprise her role as Alison in season four of The Affair, set to return to Showtime later this year. Sky Atlantic airs the show in the UK.
