Bludgeoned to death before being skinned in backyards and clandestine slaughterhouses - South Africa's donkeys are in the grip of a brutal, illegal cull spurred by demand for Chinese traditional medicine. Now the country is considering formalising the trade, following the example of Kenya and Botswana.
