The age of the £10 pint is nearly here. The cost of a round of drinks at the pub has been creeping up and up - thanks to a range of factors.

Increased inflation, a cost of living crisis, demand for higher wages and the hike in energy costs have all contributed to the cost of the humble pint. Now surge pricing - which takes into account supply and demand and which caused controversy during the Oasis tickets fiasco earlier this year - is coming into play in pubs.

And at one pub in London, punters are having to pay almost £10 a pint at certain times. The high cost comes as the branch of O'Neills in Wardour Street, Soho, has introduced a £2 surcharge for beer ordered after 10pm. This means pubgoers are paying up to £9.40 for a pint of Brewdog Punk IPA, which is priced at £7.40 before this time.

According a report in the Daily Mail, a note at the end of the bar reads: "We operate a variable price list in this venue." There have been no reports of surge pricing at pubs up north as yet - and it will come as no surprise to drinkers that some of the cheapest and best beer is available right here in Lancashire.

In fact, Blackpool was named the third cheapest place in England for a pint last month. LancsLive reported the good news for the north, as research from Alliance Online revealed the cheapest towns and cities for beer in the UK. The cost of a pint in Blackpool is just £3.25 on average, but even this seems a bit steep compared to Wrexham's £2 per pint.

Commenting on the findings, Rachael Kiss from Alliance Online said: "Our study shows that customers can still very much get a bargain beer if they look for one, with the cost of a pint varying depending on where you live in the UK. We were surprised to see such low prices in unexpected places that have lots of well-reviewed local pubs. This is good news for locals and tourists alike."
