Agents of SHIELD star Iain de Caestecker and DC's Legends of Tomorrow's Joanna Vanderham are set to lead the cast of new BBC One thriller series The Control Room.

The new drama – which comes from Hartswood Films, the production company behind hit series including Sherlock and Dracula – sees Iain de Caestecker star as Gabe, an ordinary man who works as an emergency call handler for the Scottish Ambulance Service in Glasgow.

The Control Room follows Gabe as his world is turned upside down one night when he receives a desperate life-and-death call from a woman who appears to know him. As Gabe finds himself under pressure to figure out who she is, he ends up making a decision that threatens to have devastating consequences.

"The Control Room is one of the most exciting scripts I've ever read, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time so I'm thrilled to now be bringing it to life," Iain said in a statement.

"I've always loved working with the BBC and am especially delighted to be filming alongside this fantastic cast and crew in my hometown of Glasgow."

Iain de Caestecker, who is best known for playing the role of Leo Fitz in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, will also be joined by DC's Legends of Tomorrow star Joanna Vanderham in the new series.

Joanna played the role of Atropos in the fifth season of the hit CW series, and has also starred in Cinemax crime drama Warrior as well as BBC drama One of Us, later released on Netflix as Retribution.

"I am so excited for the opportunity to bring Nick Leather's incredibly complex characters to life," Joanna added in a statement.

"Filming in my home country of Scotland is always special and my research for the character means I've been reminiscing about my own adolescence. The BBC create some of the best global programming there is and Amy Neil is going to add The Control Room to their exceptional catalogue. I can't wait for people to see what we do!"

Also set to star in The Control Room are Finding Alice's Sharon Rooney, Game of Thrones' Daniel Portman, The Syndicate and Line of Duty star Taj Atwal and Bodyguard's Stuart Bowman.

Filming on the three-part drama series is underway in Scotland now and has been written by BAFTA and RTS award-winning writer Nick Leather.

The Control Room is set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
