Agents of SHIELD has revealed the first storyline details for the season six premiere.

The opening episode, titled 'Missing Pieces', will see the team try to regather themselves following the tragic death of Phil Coulson (Clarke Gregg) at the end of last season.

A short synopsis released by ABC reads: "Scattered across the galaxy, the team works to find their footing in the wake of losing Coulson in the spectacular season six premiere of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD."

'Missing Pieces' is actually directed by Gregg himself, the second he has worked on after the season five episode 'Fun and Games'.

And just to make Gregg's involvement in the series even more confusing, he'll now also be playing a completely different character in the new season.

Ahead of its return, SHIELD recently shared a set of brand new character posters on Twitter, with Gregg included – but while the actor might look like Phil Coulson, it turns out he's actually playing someone called "Sarge" instead.

Gregg has previously teased his enigmatic new role on the series, explaining that although Sarge looks an awful lot like fan-favourite Agent Coulson, "he's a different person". And not in a good way.

"These humanoid people show up and one of them looks a lot like Coulson," he said. "He's bad, he's dangerous, and terrifying. He's a different person and it's difficult for everyone to cope with, but especially Agent May and Daisy."

Offering yet more insight into SHIELD's Coulson doppelgänger, Gregg promised fans that the series' explanation for Sarge's appearance is "groundbreaking, wild stuff".

"The mystery of who that person is and why he looks like that is something that they've done groundbreaking, wild stuff with, that I'm really lucky to play," he teased.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD airs on ABC in the US and on E4 in the UK.
