Air ambulance lands as A39 crash traffic builds

The air ambulance was called to a multi-vehicle crash in Barnstaple this afternoon (Tuesday, January 28). At the time of writing (2.15pm), the A39 is closed in both directions and traffic is building.

The collision took place between the A3125 Roundswell Roundabout and the B3233 turn off for Instow. Pictures show traffic building near the Sainsbury's store in Roundswell Business Park as vehicles avoid the closure.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported at 1.27pm: "A39 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to multi-vehicle accident from A3125 (Roundswell roundabout, Barnstaple) to B3233 (Instow Turn Off, Bideford). Congestion to routes through Instow as traffic heads away."

Devon Alert added in a post on X at 2.18pm: "Devon Police have closed the A39 in both directions Between Roundwell Roundabout, Barnstaple to Westleigh Junction, due to a RTC. Please follow diversions via B3233 and allow extra time for your journey."
