Hamerton Zoo evacuated after 'serious incident'

A zoo in Cambridgeshire has been evacuated after a "serious incident" and an air ambulance and police were called to the scene.

People posted on social media about the incident at Hamerton Zoo near Huntington.

"Police and air ambulance called to @HamertonZoo and guests are being cleared out. Hope everyone's okay," said Chris Hubbard.

He tweeted an image that appeared to show emergency services and an air ambulance.

Jessica Russell tweeted: "I shouldn't leave the house... Try to go to @HamertonZoo and all hell breaks loose. Evacuated and air ambulance/police/ambulances."

Cambridgeshire Police said on Facebook: "We were called at around 11.15am to reports of a serious incident at Hamerton Zoo Park, Steeple Gidding.

"We are unable (to give) further information available at this time, however, we can confirm that no animals have escaped and members of the public are safe.

"We will provide a further update when we are able to."

On Twitter, Magpas Air Ambulance said: "We can confirm everyone was safely evacuated, no one was running in terror, no animals escaped the enclosure and no children were injured."

The zoo, which opened in 1990, says it is home to more than 100 species, including a "beautiful white tiger".
