An air ambulance and mountain rescue team were scrambled to the highest mountain in England after a walker had 'become ill and was unable to continue'.

Wasdadle Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT)said they were called to the Hollow Stones track on Scafell Pike shortly after 1.30pm on Sunday (August 19). Team members, including two casualty carers, were diverted from another ongoing incident to assess the walker.

As they made their way to the scene, they received further information which sparked the need for a 'Helimed response' with a air ambulance being dispatched from Blackpool. Both paramedics and WMRT arrived to the casualty at around the same time ad a full assessment was carried out.

In a statement on Facebook today (August 20), WMRT added: "A subsequent request for coastguard winch capability was made due to the landing site for the helicopter and the awkward terrain for the walker. However as Rescue 936 [Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue] was responding, a team effort allowed the walker to access H08 [North West Air Ambulance Charity] and the evacuation was made to hospital more quickly.

"Thanks again to both helicopter crews. We hope the walker has a swift recovery and is back on the fells soon."

Commenting on the post, Anne Studholme said: We're so lucky to have such an awesome MR service in this country. No where else in the world comes close to the quality of service. And the fact that its all done for free because of a very selfless bunch of volunteers/"

Lindsay Buck wrote: "Well done to all involved, hope walker makes a good recovery" while Joseph Ritson added: "Well done to everyone involved, it's been a busy period for incidents. One hopes the walker makes a speedy recovery."
