Airdrieonians set to sign East Kilbride defender

Airdrieonians are set to sign East Kilbride right-back Dylan MacDonald as gaffer Rhys McCabe makes moves to strengthen his squad for a Championship title push next season.

Lanarkshire Live Sport understands the Diamonds have offered the 20-year-old Kilby kid a two-year deal at New Broomfield and he is set to become one of the Diamonds' first summer signings.

MacDonald helped the K-Park club lift the Lowland League title this season after signing on a free transfer from St Mirren at the start of that campaign.

He was a mainstay in the team, making 30 appearances for Kilby in the league, providing seven assists and scoring once for Mick Kennedy's side, but his contract with EK expired yesterday. He also scored a hat-trick in a 8-0 win over Whitehill Welfare in the Scottish Cup first round last September.

Diamonds player/boss McCabe is known to have a good eye for talented youngsters and trusting them to perform at first team level. In recent years McCabe has blooded the likes of 21-year-old Dean McMaster, who he brought in from St Mirren two years ago, and is now a regular first team player. Young Hibs loan duo Josh O'Connor and Murray Aiken were also trusted to produce the goods last season, despite both being just 19.

Another young Kilby talent could also be on the move with midfielder Kai Montagu a target for Airdrie's Championship rivals Raith Rovers. The under-20 player made four first team appearances last season, scoring once and providing one assist.

Airdrieonians are due to face East Kilbride in their opening group game of the Premier Sports League Cup next month, with a clash at New Broomfield on Tuesday, July 16.
