There's nothing worse than being crammed into a tiny seat on a plane, particularly if it's sandwiched in the middle of a row. Luckily, there's now a way to find out which budget airline provides the roomiest seats, so you don't have to sacrifice your much-needed comfort.

Which? has calculated which airlines offer the most generous seating, ensuring you get the best bang for your buck. On short haul flights, the seat width (the distance between each armrest) varies from 17 to 18 inches, which might not sound like much, according to the Express. However, that extra inch can make all the difference when you're squashed in like sardines, reports the Mirror.

The airlines offering the widest economy seats are Wizz Air, TAP Portugal, easyJet and Lufthansa, all with widths of 18 inches. This means the airlines with the tightest seat widths are British Airways, Jet2, KLM, Norwegian, Ryanair, Tui and Aer Lingus, all tied at 17 inches.

Vueling sits in the middle ground with a seat width of 17.5 inches. Below are airline seat width and legroom in inches.

If you're hoping to secure more space on your budget flight without paying extra, there are a few tricks you can try.

One such tip is to book a seat in the bulkhead - the seats directly behind the walls, curtains or screens that separate the plane. These seats have no seats in front, allowing you to stretch your legs as far as they'll go.

However, these can be slightly narrower if tray tables are stored in the armrest.

If you're not keen on a bulkhead seat, consider choosing one towards the back of the plane where it narrows. This often results in fewer seats in a row, although you may find yourself next to the toilet queue which can be somewhat disruptive.

If your flight has already taken off and you spot some vacant seats, don't hesitate to politely ask the cabin crew if you could switch seats. Remember, if you don't ask, you won't get - and as long as you're courteous, there's a possibility they might accommodate your request.

If you have special requirements that necessitate more room, such as being tall or pregnant, there's a fair chance you could be relocated to a more spacious area.
