The family of Liverpool legend Alan Hansen have expressed their gratitude to fans and well-wishers after the football icon was discharged from hospital.

Hansen, aged 69, had been hospitalised earlier this month due to severe illness, as confirmed by a statement from Liverpool. News of his condition saw an outpouring of support from personalities such as Gary Lineker and Jamie Carragher.

In a heartening turn of events, former team-mate Graeme Souness shared that he had spoken to Hansen over the phone, with the ex-Reds' captain sounding 'fabulous'.

Now back home, the Hansen family issued a thank you message for the overwhelming support received during these times.

Liverpool released a statement on behalf of the family stating: "Alan has been discharged from hospital today to continue his recovery at home," reports Liverpool.com.

His relatives added: "Alan, Janet, Adam, Lucy and family would like to thank everybody for their wonderful messages of love and support. It has been overwhelming and has helped enormously."

The family also expressed appreciation for the respect shown towards their privacy: "We also hugely appreciate the ongoing respect that has been shown for our privacy as Alan continues his recovery. Thank you."

Hansen is known as one of Liverpool's greatest ever players, having made 620 appearances for the club and claimed eight league titles as well as three European Cups. He later became renowned as one of UK television's most esteemed football pundits, often seen on Match of the Day.
