Alan Shearer has taken to social media to congratulate Southampton following their Championship play-off final victory over Leeds United.

The Whites ' Wembley woes resurfaced once again having last visited the national stadium in 2008 when they lost the League One play-off final to Doncaster Rovers. Adam Armstrong's first-half strike proved to be the difference despite Daniel Farke 's side's best efforts.

Daniel James came the closest for the Yorkshire club late into the contest. A kind break of the ball allowed the Welshman to volley a ball towards Alex McCarthy's goal, only to be denied by the crossbar.

The encounter in the capital concludes Leeds' campaign in the cruellest of fashions having accumulated 90 points in the league season but missing out on automatic promotion. The victory for Russell Martin's side marks a memorable first term in charge for the 38-year-old, ensuring the South Coast club secured an immediate return to the top flight.

And former Saints striker, Shearer has taken to social media to congratulate the side he spent four years with during the early parts of his career. The Premier League's record goalscorer netted 32 goals in 132 appearances before completing a move to Blackburn Rovers.

Taking to X, the 53-year-old, who presents Match of the Day, is already looking forward to providing analysis on his former club next term. He said: "Congratulations @SouthamptonFC see you on @BBCMOTD next season."
