Alan Shearer delivers two-word verdict on Nottingham Forest’s historic victory at Liverpool

Nottingham Forest’s first win at Liverpool since 1969 drew predictable comparisons to putting a man on the moon, but on Saturday history was with Nuno Espirito Santo and his battling Reds.

Both teams had gone into this game unbeaten, but the hosts had yet to concede a goal and were returning from the international break fresh from humbling Manchester United at Old Trafford.

However, Forest are no respecters of tradition, and a brilliant performance ensured they achieved a feat that was even beyond the great Reds teams of Brian Clough.

Nuno’s 2024 version at first held Liverpool at bay and then delivered the coup de grace, substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi firing home a sublime strike on 72 minutes to ensure a 1-0 victory.

After enduring Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker’s several puns about moon landings and plenty of space for Hudson-Odoi to grab his winning goal, pundit Alan Shearer got down to the serious business of analysing arguably Forest’s greatest win since returning to the Premier League just over two seasons ago.

He said: “They were absolutely magnificent. From start to finish, they had a game plan and it worked to perfection.

“You've got to be almost perfect when you're going to Anfield with the form Liverpool have been in, and Forest were.

“There was just no way through, no spaces, no gaps in the middle. They were really tight, really compact, and that was a constant all afternoon.

“Liverpool just got so frustrated with how well Forest were playing, how hard they were making it.”

As for the winning goal, Shearer added: “Liverpool are on the attack. [Nikola] Milenkovic is too strong for Darwin Nunez and he wins the ball, but just watch the way they break.

"It’s Anthony Elanga, who came on as a substitute, into Hudson-Odoi, who came on as a substitute - and what a pass into him. You can say what you want about the Liverpool defending, but it's a brilliant goal, from one end to the other, and it's in the back of the net.

“This was no fluke. It was absolutely deserved. What a win for Nuno and what an afternoon for the Forest supporters. Two wins, two draws and a great start to the season.”
