Aldi is introducing a pay rise for 45,000 people it employs in the UK. Aldi says the minimum hourly rate will rise to £12.71, up from £12.40 an hour currently, while employees working in London will see their hourly pay rise to at least £14, up from £13.65.

Store assistant pay will rise further to £13.62 nationally, and £14.23 within the M25, based on the length of service. Aldi employs around 45,000 people in the UK across 1,020 stores, the German supermarket giant and discounter retailer said.

Aldi continues to be the only supermarket to offer paid breaks, which is worth approximately £1,370 a year for the average store colleague. Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our colleagues are the best in the business and this latest pay rise reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring they remain the best paid.

“Every single Aldi colleague plays an absolutely vital role in delivering on our promise to bringing unbeatable Aldi prices to even more customers across the UK.” It comes a week on from Aldi committed to opening a swathe of new stores in the capital city.

Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: “We strongly believe that everyone in Britain should have access to high quality food at our unbeatable Aldi prices. But we know that there are still thousands of shoppers in the capital that don’t yet have access to an Aldi nearby.

“We don’t think it’s fair that so many people still have to make do with big prices at other supermarkets, which is why London continues to be a real focus for us as we work to bring even more Aldi stores to shoppers across the capital.”

Aldi has been named by Which? as officially the UK’s cheapest supermarket of the year for 2024, the fourth year in a row the supermarket has picked up the title.
