Discount supermarket chain Aldi has reaffirmed its commitment to a Lincolnshire town despite previous legal issues and shared new plans for the site. East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) granted planning permission to develop a new £7 million Aldi store on Spilsby Road, Horncastle, in November 2022.

However, construction was delayed after Lidl launched a legal claim on the grounds that ELDC did not consider its revised application for a new store in the town at the same time. A judicial review challenge was then submitted by Lidl to ensure that each application could be "determined equally" and, as a result, Aldi's planning permission was revoked.

Despite the setback, Aldi told Lincolnshire Live it 'remains committed' to bringing a store to Horncastle and claims its new plans offer wider benefits through an associated outline proposal. This associated proposal would be delivered by another applicant and would include a 24-hour petrol station, Rapid Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points, tourist rest and welcome facilities, toilets, and a tourist information hub promoting the Lincolnshire Wolds and Lincolnshire coast.

Aldi says these services are to be made available by the delivery of its store and, if approved, would be subject to a reserved matters application at a later date. Mark Stringer, real estate director for Aldi, said: "We believe our plan is the right one for Horncastle, bringing unbeatable value, well-paid jobs, and new facilities for the local community.

"This proposal encompasses so much more than just a supermarket; it introduces the town’s first 24-hour petrol station, rapid charging points, and a tourist information point. Our development is offered in tandem with the existing Laurels Service Station, which is highly valued by the local community."

The site is owned by the local proprietor of Laurels Service Station, Guy White, who added: "The proposed Aldi development represents a crucial opportunity for growth not only for my business but for the entire Horncastle community.

"The addition of a 24-hour petrol station, rapid EV charging points, and planned tourist facilities will meet the evolving needs of our residents and visitor economy while preserving the valued services we provide. I am excited about the potential this project has to enhance our local economy and support our community."
