Aldi, Selfridges, Ocado and Amazon 'do not eat' warnings as vodka, soup and chocolate products recalled

Aldi, Selfridges, Ocado and Amazon have all had to take food off the shelves, with bosses telling customers not to eat them in case they pose a health risk.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has told people that some products in these supermarkets may not be safe to eat. They include soup and chocolate products and if you have purchased any of these things, you should take them back to the shop and receive a full refund.

Meanwhile, the public are being warned about fake bottles of Glen’s Vodka which have been found to contain an industrial solvent that can cause death in severe cases. Some counterfeit bottles have been found to contain isopropyl alcohol, which is not intended for human consumption, and may have a strange smell and taste differently to genuine vodka.

Here are the details of several food recalls that have taken place recently.

Vodka

People are being warned not to drink certain bottles of vodka after the FSA was made aware of "the production and distribution of counterfeit vodka". The watchdog said it can lead to a number of grim symptoms and even death if consumed.

The FSA said the fake vodka has been labelled as genuine brand Glen's, and that the counterfeit version "may have a strange smell and taste differently to genuine vodka". It added that samples were found to contain isopropyl alcohol, which is not safe for human consumption.

A food alert for action notice has been issued to local authorities, "requesting them to identify and visit relevant establishments in their area to check for counterfeit products and make businesses aware of the issue". The fake Glen's vodka bottles are 35cl in size.

Isopropyl alcohol, the FSA said, can lead to nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, intoxication, respiratory depression and coma. Cardiovascular collapse is also possible, and anyone with symptoms should seek medical attention.

FSA guidance reads: "If you have bought any Glen’s vodka that either has no laser etched lot code applied to the bottle between the rear label and the base of the bottle as indicated in the images below. Please be aware isopropyl alcohol has a strong odour and it may be possible to detect contaminated products by smell alone.

"If the vodka has a strong smell, do not consume it. Instead store it in a safe place and report it to your local authority for further instruction and advice. If anyone has any information on the manufacture or sale of counterfeit alcohol, then please contact our freephone confidential National Food Crime Unit hotline: 0800 028 1180."
