Alec Baldwin urged for film and TV production companies to employ police officers on set to monitor weapons safety.

The actor fatally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after he fired a prop gun while filming movie Rust in New Mexico last month in a tragedy which rocked Hollywood to its core.

Now the Hollywood legend, 63, has called for more safety on film sets in the wake of the tragedy and suggested a police officer should be hired to monitor any weapons.

A post on the Hilaria and Alec Baldwin Foundation Twitter page reposted by the actor on his personal Instagram account said: “Every film/TV set that uses guns, fake or otherwise, should have a police officer on set, hired by the production, to specifically monitor weapons safety.”

Director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured during the incident.

A police investigation is under way into the shooting.

Authorities in Santa Fe have been investigating how a suspected live round came to be in the firearm which had been declared safe by an assistant director, according to court documents.

Shortly after the tragedy, Mr Baldwin broke his silence to say his heart was broken in a series of tweets.

Behind the scenes, the It’s Complicated actor has been lending his support to the husband of late Ms Hutchins.

He wrote: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and…”

A second tweet said: “I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”
