Dr Alex George wants to see NHS staff in 'Love Island' line-up

Dr Alex George has said he wants Love Island bosses to pick some NHS staff for the new series of the dating show.

The popular ITV programme returns later this month and the A&E doctor said it “makes sense” for NHS workers to be represented, as it would reflect what’s gone on during the coronavirus pandemic.

“ITV know for the past year there's been so much focus on the NHS and it's good to actually represent that in the cast,” he told MailOnline.

“It'll be good to see some representatives from the NHS there. I will be glad to see a doctor on the show or a nurse or someone within the healthcare system to represent every angle of society.”

Dr Alex, 30, was one of the singletons looking for love in the 2018 series of the dating show.

In recent months he has said he hopes to see more diversity on the programme "in all sorts of ways".

Doubling down on his previous comments, he told the Mail he is “hoping they'll have diversity both in body and background”.

There has already been a lot of speculation about what this summer’s Love Island line-up might look like, and there have previously been rumours about it possibly featuring LGBTQ+ contestants.

ITV’s commissioner Amada Stavri told RadioTimes.com that there have been more applications than ever for the upcoming series and that the show will encourage “greater inclusivity and diversity”.

However, she also said that including gay Islanders could be a challenge because of the format of the programme.

“There’s a sort of logistical difficulty, because although Islanders don’t have to be 100% straight, the format must sort of give Islanders an equal choice when coupling up,” she said.

The series, hosted by Laura Whitmore, is due to return on 28 June on ITV2.
