The One Show’s Alex Jones was moved to tears after Sir Tom Jones told her the death of his wife left him feeling like he may never sing again.

Sir Tom’s wife Lady Melinda Rose Woodward – who he was married to for 59 years - died in 2016 after a battle with cancer.

During an interview on The One Show, the Welsh singer told Jones that all the songs on his new album Surrounded By Time told of a different part of his life.

“Like the first one, I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall, my late wife Linda, God bless her, she had lung cancer and she was passing away,” he said.

“I was there in the hospital room with her for the last 10 days and I said, ‘My God Linda, I don’t know what I am going to do with myself because I won’t be able to sing, I won’t be able to get the words out’.”

The singer’s wife told him he must sing again, urging: “Don’t fall with me.”

Linda told Sir Tom, 80, that he needed to do what they had planned to do, which was move back to London.

He told presenter Jones: “She said, ‘But I have just run out of time but you have got to go and do it now.'

"And she said, 'But when you get on the stage, think of me laughing, don’t think of me as I am now, think of all the years we have had together and that should lift you up’, which it does.”
