Alexander Rossi's Car Lands on Helio Castroneves In Terrifying IndyCar Crash

From Road & Track

Think open-cockpit race cars should remain unprotected? Watch this and you might think again. It's no small miracle that Helio Castroneves managed to walk away after Alexander Rossi's car literally landed on his head.

The crash occurred in Monday's ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. After leaving his pit box, Alexander Rossi made contact with Charlie Kimball who appeared to be entering his pit box, sending his car flying. Rossi's car tumbled over Helio Castroneves before landing further down pit road.

After this incident, the race was put under yellow, though it has since gone back to green. Kimball is back out on track, and Castroneves's car was taken behind pit wall for repairs, but Rossi is out of the race.

"I was released. I was in the slow lane. Kimball was into fast lane to box. I was still in my lane. I know what happened. I was in the slow lane. Very unfortunate," Rossi told NBC Sports. "I was concerned about Helio. Just glad he's alright."

It's amazing that Castroneves was able to walk away from this, but that shouldn't be taken for granted. Even if he is fine, this incident presents a strong argument for introducing some sort of cockpit protection to IndyCar.
