Alexander Zverev has admitted his expectations are low for the rest of this year as he continues his comeback from a serious ankle injury, but the big-serving German is taking huge strides up the ATP Rankings.

Zverev beat Grigor Dimitrov in thrilling fashion to book his place in the fourth round against Jannik Sinner and his latest triumph may have cemented his return to the top tier of the game.

The provisional ATP Rankings may change by the end of the US Open, yet the current list confirms Zverev is in line to make a return to the top 10.

Zverev could also be in line to make an appearance at the ATP Finals in Turin, the end-of-season event open to the top eight players in the calendar year.

The German is currently at No 10 in the Race to Turin, with the door open for him to make it through to the event he won in 2018 and 2021.

With no ranking points to defend for the rest of 2023, Zverev could be comfortably in the top 10 by the end of the year and a deep run in the final major of the year in New York could push him towards qualification to the ATP Finals in Turin at the end of the season.

Zverev had a career-high ranking of No 2 in June 2022, which was when he was playing his best tennis ahead of the injury at the French Open in a high-octane semi-final match against Rafael Nadal.

Other big movers in the ATP rankings are set to include Ben Shelton, who is projected to break into the world’s top 30 for the first time after his impressive form at the US Open.

Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi is also set to be a mover in the rankings after his run at the US Open continued with a win against British No 1 Cameron Norrie.

Arnaldi is on course to break into the top 50 in the world for the first time in his career, with Croatia’s Borna Gojo certain of a place in the top 100 of the rankings after his breakthrough wins in New York.

Another player to watch in the ATP rankings is British star Jack Draper, who has reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Draper has a career-high of 38, but he has slipped down the rankings after his injury woes in recent months.

Now he is knocking on the door of the top 100 again, with scope for more ranking rises if he can stay fit for the rest of 2023.

In the WTA Rankings, Caroline Wozniacki’s impressive run to the fourth round of the US Open has seen her jump almost 250 places in the WTA rankings.

The Dane will be up to around 240 in the rankings when they are released next Monday, with her form in New York suggesting she could get back in the mix to challenge for a return to the top ten in due course.

American Peyton Stearns has also hit another of her big targets, with her run to the second week of the US Open ensuring she will be a top 50 player for the first time next week.
