Alexandra Burke's debut routine on Strictly Come Dancing was bittersweet for the singer following the sad death of her mother.

Partnered up with Gorka Marquez, the pair performed a rather elegant Waltz to '(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman' by Aretha Franklin, which is a song close to her heart.

"The Strictly experience has been a load of emotions all in one go," The X Factor winner said in her VT before her performance.

"This is a song that my mum always made me sing. It's making me nervous because I'm so emotional about it."

Following the tragic news of her mum's death on August 28, Alexandra said she would have wanted her to carry on with the show.

"Mummy has always been my biggest supporter and was over the moon when I told her I was doing Strictly," she said in a Twitter post.

"It was always a dream of hers that I would one day be part of the show and I know that she would have wanted me to carry on," she explained.

Alexandra managed to get through the routine on the night, but by the time she reached the judges table, she was very emotional.

But luckily for the singer, the judges all had rather positive things to say about her performance.

"You're arms were so expressive, beautiful. You have such a great feel for the music and a great feel for this particular dance. It was lovely," Craig said.

Darcey noted her musicality was "exquisite" and she was excited to see what was to come for her.

Shirley said: "I could see this dance meant something to you because it was quite emotional.

She added: "I have a feeling you're going to be a front runner from what I've just seen."

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One.
