Alexandria artist's dream to follow in footsteps of renowned Ross Muir
An Alexandria artist displaying his work at a major show says he aims to follow in the footsteps of fellow Vale man Ross Muir.
Mark Haining – known as Markyboy – will display his work at the Big Art Show in Paisley, which runs until November 17.
The 42-year-old admits he wishes he had started pursuing a career as an artist sooner, but now hopes to follow in the footsteps of Rosshead man Ross Muir – who has reached global fame for his uniquely Scottish take on iconic paintings.
Mark told the Lennox: “I have always loved doing art and being creative for as far back as I can remember.
“I can remember winning a prize at primary school and gaining an art Higher at the Vale of Leven Academy.

“Unfortunately I didn’t pursue a path to university, instead, I was kind of encouraged to get a trade in horticulture which worked out fine.
“But I realised this could be more than a hobby after gaining confidence drawing for a local writer, however not a lot happened for a while.
“I probably had more of a change in mindset when we came back from a family holiday in Vegas 2017 when we walked close toward the venue during a shooting.
“That experience definitely shaped my desire to do something with my life and in particular, my artwork.
“I’ve followed Ross for years.
“He has had a remarkable journey and totally deserves every success.
“To follow his art journey would be a dream.”
Marky’s style is diverse, with his two pieces on display in Paisley showcasing the range of his talent.
He continued: “I like to have different styles and being creative, reacting to my mood at the time.
“I have always loved to draw animals but I am currently working on large industrial pop artwork at the moment using recycled materials and neon lighting.
“Music inspires me a lot as well, from rock, dance and rap.
“The two I am showing at the Big Art Show are my framed Bull Elephant drawing in guild and my abstract Horizon piece using spray paint.

“This might determine which style is most popular and may give me a direction to go in the future.
“So far the local feedback has been really good and I have sold a lot of original animal pieces and prints.
“I am hoping the Big Art Show will bring a little more exposure.”
And he had advice for anyone, like him, considering following their dream.
Mark added: “My advice to anyone reading this is to keep going, keep creating and don’t wait for anyone’s approval.
“As Andy Warhol said, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.
“I am 42 and should have done this sooner.”
