Alexei Navalny: Putin critic loses sentence appeal

·1-min read

Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has lost an appeal against what he has described as a politically motivated decision to jail him for nearly three years.

The Russian opposition leader, an anti-corruption campaigner and President Vladimir Putin's most vocal critic, was sentenced earlier in February for allegedly violating parole charges.

On Saturday morning, the court in Moscow rejected his appeal. However, his original jail term has been shortened by six weeks.

The original sentence was 3.5 years but, with the amount of time he has already spent under house arrest, amounted to around two years and eight months.
