The crew of Alien: Covenant are all-smiles in the movie's first full cast photo. Big mistake.

Sir Ridley Scott welcomes us aboard his tricked-out space vessel the Covenant to meet the crew and Captain Branson (James Franco) - who we're seeing for the very first time in this preview.

You can spy Michael Fassbender in the corner too, although we're not quite sure which of his two characters is pictured. He'll return as Prometheus's surviving android David and new model Walter.

What we do know about the Prometheus follow-up is that our hero is Katherine Waterston's Daniels, who was once married to Branson. More on that in the film itself, we presume…

Of course, the crew of Covenant make the giant mistake of returning to the planet where every member of the Prometheus (minus David and Noomi Rapace's Elizabeth Shaw) was wiped out, and we were introduced to a precursor to Alien's classic xenomorph. Missions like these never go well!

Digital Spy recently got some scoop on Alien: Covenant directly from Michael Fassbender, who hinted that his two androids might not get along so well once they're both on board the same ship.

"I'm getting greedy, aren't I? It's an ego scenario here," he joked. "I just realised that after wrapping Alien. I was like, 'Damn, I've been playing two characters in both [that and Assassin's Creed]'."

Michael went on to admit: "I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say. Well, [Walter is] definitely a servant of the ship.

"We're coming to a period after Prometheus… The thing is, obviously, there's been modifications to the robots since then. So there's been developments because of some of the things that David had that perhaps were a bit worrying for people - the characteristics."

More footage from the sci-fi blockbuster will be arriving on Wednesday (February 22), so hopefully we'll get a closer look at the new xenomorph itself.

Alien: Covenant opens on May 19 in the UK and the US. Watch the first teaser below:
