The upcoming Alien TV series appears to have found one of its lead stars in Don't Worry Darling star Sydney Chandler.

The FX series, which comes from Fargo's Noah Hawley, is set way before the events of the original Alien and features a new cast of characters on Earth.

It has now been confirmed by TheWrap that Chandler, who also appeared in Pistol, will play one of the lead roles – though further details remain unknown for now.

The Alien series was first announced back in 2020, with original director Ridley Scott also working on the show.

However, last year it was confirmed that Sigourney Weaver will not be back in her iconic role of Ripley given the show's timeframe.

"[The new] Alien takes place before Ripley," FX boss John Landgraf said at the time. "It's the first story that takes place in the Alien franchise on Earth. So, it takes place on our planet. Right near the end of this century we're in – so 70-odd years from now."

He added: "Ripley won't be a part of it or any of the other characters of Alien other than the alien itself."

Landgraf went on to praise Hawley, saying he has an "incredible ability", elaborating: "I think you've seen it with Fargo, to both find a way of being faithful, showing fidelity to an original creation like a Coen brothers' movie, or in this case, Ridley Scott's and James Cameron's follow-up, Aliens, but also to bring something new to the table that represents extension and reinvention of a franchise at the same time."

As well as TV, Alien is due to return to the big screen in a new movie directed and co-written by Evil Dead's Fede Álvarez.

The film is due to star Industry's David Jonsson, Shadow and Bone's Archie Renaux, The Batman's Spike Fearn, actress-producer Aileen Wu and Mare of Easttown's Cailee Spaeny.
