Ally Sheedy says she fought John Hughes over controversial Breakfast Club makeover scene

Ally Sheedy has revealed that she disliked the makeover given to her character in the iconic 1980s teen movie The Breakfast Club.

Speaking to The Independent ahead of the 35th anniversary of the film's UK release, Sheedy revealed that she fought director John Hughes over the scene.

It depicts her oddball outsider character Allison swapping her black wardrobe for a pink dress. Many fans of the film have criticised the moment.

“Listen, it was Hollywood in the Eighties,” Sheedy explained. “They wanted to take the ugly duckling and make her into a swan. I didn’t want anyone to be putting makeup on my face, so I tried to negotiate with John that it would be about taking stuff off, or Allison taking down this wall that she had put up to keep people at arm’s length.”

Sheedy starred in the film alongside Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez and Judd Nelson. It revolves around five disparate teenagers forced to interact with one another for the first time during Saturday detention.

As part of the film’s anniversary celebrations, Sheedy has partnered with NOW TV to offer 50 randomly selected fans the chance to join a private Zoom call and submit questions for her to answer live on camera.

The Zoom event, which will follow an exclusive online watch party, takes place at 7pm BST on Sunday 7 June.
