Sad news for those of you who were hoping to try out the new The Wicker Man rollercoaster at Alton Towers this weekend.

The new ride, based off the Christopher Lee classic and its awful Nicolas Cage remake, was due to open this weekend, but the threat of the Beast from the East 2.0 storm has forced them to reconsider.

On the official website, a statement reads: "The theme park is open as planned today, and our hotels, Rollercoaster Restaurant and waterpark are fully open as normal.

"As we thought however, the weather forecast has not improved – with below zero temperatures, snow and high winds all still expected throughout the day – meaning we won't be able to operate our rollercoasters today, including Wicker Man, our new thrill attraction.

"Today, we are opening CBeebies Land, Mutiny Bay (Marauder's Mayhem & Heave Ho!), Cloud Cuckoo Land (Driving School, Frog Hopper & Gallopers Carousel), HEX and Sharkbait Reef by SEA LIFE.

"We'll continue to monitor the situation throughout the day and will post an update on ride openings for Sunday on our social media channels."

Digital Spy actually have a roving reporter at Alton Towers right now and there is so little snow in the air you can't even make it out in the picture below. Having said that, we've probably jinxed it now and there will be a huge blizzard later, so better of Alton Towers to be safe than sorry.

We've also been told that all rollercoasters will re-open on Monday (March 19).

If you had a ticket for this weekend, you can just turn up on any day before June 30 with your ticket and be allowed entry. If you had an overnight stay booked then you need to get in touch with them.

You mere mortals may not be able to experience the UK's first wooden rollercoaster in years this weekend, but some lucky celebrities got the chance last night at a glamorous launch event.

Rag'n'Bone Man, The X Factor's Matt Terry, Coronation Street's Lucy Fallon, Strictly Come Dancing's Joe McFadden and Sophie Ellis-Bextor were among the stars who got to try the ride.

Judging by their faces, it was pretty terrifying.
