Alton Towers 'legend' Isabel, 81, retires after 30 years
An 81-year-old ride host has been hailed as "a true Alton Towers legend" as she bid farewell to the Staffordshire theme park after more than 30 years. Isabel Watson, from Cotton, began her remarkable career at the popular resort in the early 1990s.
She initially took on the role of demonstrating traditional spinning and weaving as part of the Old MacDonald’s Farm attraction. Her enthusiasm, passion for storytelling and genuine love for interacting with park visitors made her an instant favourite among thrill-seekers of all ages.
In later years, Isabel moved into the Rides team where she quickly became known for her cheerful demeanour, unwavering commitment to safety and infectious energy. Whether guiding guests through the thrills of the park or offering a reassuring smile to those feeling a bit apprehensive, Isabel’s presence was a constant source of warmth and joy for both guests and her colleagues.

Over the years, Isabel has been recognised with numerous awards, particularly for her commitment to supporting others in training and development. Her dedication to mentoring new and younger colleagues has not gone unnoticed, with Isabel often praised for her willingness to share her vast experience and knowledge of the park.
Talking about her role, Isabel said: "I have worked at Alton Towers Resort for over 30 seasons and started on the spinning and weaving demonstrations as part of Old MacDonald's Farm. I worked with the animals too before I moved over to the rides department.
"The people I have worked with are fantastic, both front-line colleagues and management. We have such a mix of ages, skills and experience in our team. It is great to share my knowledge with everyone and my colleagues are always happy to support me. I enjoy sharing my experiences with the younger team members. I would recommend working here to anyone."
Rides manager, Gaz Birks, praised Isabel for her years of service. "Isabel Watson is a true Alton Towers legend," he said. "Her commitment, passion, and kindness have made a lasting impact on everyone she’s worked with, and she will be greatly missed by the entire Resort family. We wish her all the best in her retirement and thank her for the incredible contributions she’s made to the park."
To mark her retirement, Alton Towers Resort hosted a special farewell celebration for Isabel, inviting colleagues and friends to honour her exceptional career and the memories she’s created over the years. Bianca Sammut, divisional director for Alton Towers Resort, said: "We will miss Isabel and seeing her at the Resort.
"She has touched the lives of many colleagues and guests over the last three decades. Her decision to return to the Resort each season reflects her passion for wanting to make a difference and others smile whether that is as a guest visiting us or as a colleague working alongside her. Isabel is part of so many people’s memories and leaves behind a legacy of dedication and kindness."
