A ride at Alton Towers had to be evacuated yesterday after suffering a malfunction – just a week after five people people were severely injured in a roller-coaster crash at the theme park.

The Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure, based on the CBeebies show, came to a stop after developing a fault - but one rider became extremely extremely anxious, prompting the decision to evacuate the ride.

The park released a statement saying: 'On 10 June, an incident occurred when, for unknown reasons, a guest became agitated on the Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure.

'In line with standard procedures, this led to the ride being evacuated. Alton Towers resort staff followed all normal processes to ensure guests were taken off the ride quickly and safely.'

A witness told the Guardian he heard shouting and saw the evacuation.

He said: 'There was a lady next to me whose son was really distressed and she was shouting up to him to stay calm and that everything would be all right.'

It is understood that standard procedure when a ride comes to a halt is for it to be reset. However, the decision to evacuate was taken after a passenger became agitated. Passengers wore safety harnesses attached to a railing as they left the ride.

Meanwhile, Leah Washington, the most seriously injured of the victims of last week's crash at Alton Towers, has stood up for the first time since the accident, her brother revealed yesterday.

The 17-year-old had to have her left leg amputated above the knee following the horror smash on The Smiler ride.

Leah, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, remains in hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, but her family say her bravery has helped her recovery.

Her brother Luke said: 'Compared to last week it’s a world of difference. It’s amazing to see.

'I walked into the room on Tuesday and it was the first time she has stood up since.'

A Health and Safety Executive investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Alton Towers reopened to visitors on Monday, although the Smiler ride itself remains closed.
