'I Am A Legislator': State Rep. Handcuffed By Capitol Police in Georgia While Protesting Controversial Voting Law

Georgia State Representative Park Cannon was forcibly removed from the State Capitol in Atlanta on March 25, as a demonstration took place against the signing of a controversial elections bill.

In video captured by Mina Turabi, Rep. Cannon can be seen being dragged backwards through the security screening point, handcuffed, with her hands behind her back. Rep. Cannon can be heard saying “I am a legislator”, “do not touch me” and “why are there three officers touching me?”

Protests were held in the Capitol building in Atlanta against the signing of a contentious voting bill that would introduce restrictions on voting by mail and greater legislative control over how elections are run, according to reports. Opponents to the bill said it would disproportionately disenfranchise voters of color. Credit: Mina Turabi via Storyful
