Amanda Holden may be a show-off, but she's the fashion joy we all need in lockdown

Between Zoom calls and social media selfies, we’re all dressing for an audience in lockdown - but to be completely honest, the majority of us are only thinking about the top half of our bodies, i.e. the part that can actually be seen on screen.

But Amanda Holden, the Britain’s Got Talent judge and radio presenter, has used her daily commute to the Heart radio offices and her regular social media updates, to remind followers of the joy of getting all dressed up.

The 49-year-old has eschewed the athleisure and saved comfort dressing to be worn only behind closed doors. Instead, Holden has used lockdown to experiment with her style and wear all the things that most people are not in a rush to return to right now - namely leather jackets, high heels, defined waistbands and sharp tailoring.

She has also managed to become somewhat of a social media style star, catching our attention with her catwalk Boomerang videos, TikTok challenges and DIY music videos to the tunes of Billy Idol and Beyonce.

On Instagram, Holden is engaging with her 1.5 million followers by styling herself as a high fashion meme; she's worn a wedding dress to mow the lawn, and partook in the #GlamForYourBinman challenge hashtag, dressing up in a ball gown to take out the bins. It's show-offy, yes, but provides the kind of light relief we all need at this time.

What I like most about Holden and what sets her apart from other fashion influencers on Instagram is that she’s not snobby when it comes to brands. She mixes high and low price points - and most of the time ensures that she’s wearing British brands - she has worn everything from Vivienne Westwood and Emilia Wickstead to River Island.

Holden’s standout silhouette is her belted 1940s and 1950s-style dresses - summery and super-flattering as they serve to define her waist and elongate her lower body. Her swing dresses vary from Gestuz, a Scandi label that specialises in minimalism, to popular online high street boutiques like Forever Unique and Silk Fred, favoured mostly by reality stars. Holden sticks to the golden rule of investing in what works for you, a strategy which has worked to her advantage during a time with a shortage of services like a hands-on stylist or tailor (she usually employs Karl Willett who has also worked with Jennifer Hudson and Paloma Faith).

At a time where the fashion industry looks to be in serious trouble, Holden is holding out hope and encouraging others to look on the bright side by dressing for joy in all sorts of talking-point outfits. Who would have thought we would be counting on Amanda Holden to be the burst of fashion fun and colour at the end of the dark tunnel?
