Amazing new seafood deli to open on Plymouth's Barbican

A new seafood deli will open on Plymouth’s Barbican today - bank holiday Monday - in the space left vacant when The Catch closed last year. The Hook and Line Fishmonger and Deli is an offshoot of the Royal William Yard’s popular Hook and Line restaurant.

The eatery’s owner Steve Page and Ben Squire, landlord of the Southside Street unit and owner of the Boathouse restaurant and Plymouth Boat Trips, have combined to create the new seafood store, which will also have room for people to sit in and enjoy a crab sandwich with a coffee, beer or glass of wine. Mr Page said: “It’s great to have a presence on the Barbican doing what the Barbican is famous for, which is selling fish.”

The Hook and Line Fishmonger and Deli is based in the compact corner unit, at one time a fudge shop, where The Catch traded successfully until the death of top chef Lee Holland, in November 2023. Mr Page said opening another restaurant would not have been appropriate and said: “It was such an important part of the Barbican, so to replicate the Catch would have been difficult.

“So we asked what the Barbican didn’t have and realised there was no real place to get fresh fish, so it will have a fresh fish counter, frozen fish, charcuterie and cheeses too. But we have a little bench if you want to come in and eat and we’ll sell crab sandwiches, ready to go, with spirits and wines.”

Mr Page said all the produce will be sourced from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. He said: “It is great to support the fishing trade and local producers.”

Hook and Line Fishmonger and Deli will be managed by Conor Deacon, who will move over from the Royal William Yard restaurant, and will have up to three other staff. It will open on May 27 at 9am and operate seven days a week, closing at either 6pm or 7pm.

The Hook and Line restaurant has just celebrated four years in business and Mr Page said: “It’s going really well.”
