Amazon’s Echo Dot was given a fresh new look in 2020 with a spherical design replacing the puck of old.
Now in its fourth generation, the humble Dot has evolved into a fully-fledged smart speaker and it's currently on sale for Amazon's Prime Day, with the newest Echo Dot having a massive 60% slashed off the price. Usually £49.99 RRP, the latest version of its best-selling smart speaker is now only £19.99.
Why we love it
Amazon’s Echo Dot may be small — measuring just 100mm wide — but it offers all the smarts of its larger Echo stablemates.
You can voice control your music (be it from Amazon Music, Spotify, Deezer or Apple), listen to audiobooks and podcasts, get news updates and adjust connected compatible devices, like lights and thermostats.
And if you already have other Echo speakers in your house, you can also use this new diminutive Dot to make room-to-room calls or broadcast important announcements to every connected speaker in the house.
Similar to other Alexa smart speakers, there’s no Ethernet connection, which means you will need to sync your device to the Wi-Fi for it to work.
Buy it: All-new Echo Dot | £19.99 (Was £49.99) from Amazon - 60% off
While this all-new Dot sounds better than its predecessors, you can still use it to upgrade a “non-smart” Hi-Fi or sound system, using the 3.5mm audio output. Just run a connecting cable between the two, and your existing audio kit takes over playback duties. The quality of music streamed this way is excellent.
Versatile, compact and undeniably clever, we reckon this new Echo Dot is both an ideal first smart speaker, and a great addition to an existing Alexa system.
The fourth generation Amazon Echo Dot has received glowing reviews from shoppers, with over 200,000 reviews ratings, 81% of which have been rated five stars.
Whether you want to ask the device what the daily weather forecast is, or for it to play your favourite morning radio channel, shoppers say it'll become a piece of tech that will be part of the family.
Or, if you want to spend a little less the original Alexa is now only £16.99, which is the most budget-friendly we've ever seen the speaker with 58% off.
