Amazon TV series The Power pulls out of filming in Georgia over Alabama abortion law

Reed Morano's upcoming Amazon series The Power has pulled out of filming in Georgia after a controversial bill was passed in Alabama which effects a near-total ban on abortion in the state.

Morano said it "felt wrong" to shoot the project - based on the Naomi Alderman novel that sees women become the dominant gender - in a state that has moved to severely restrict terminations.

Scouts had been scoping out locations in Savannah for filming but the process was halted when Governor Brian Kemp signed the law on May 7.

"It feels wrong for a reason. And it felt wrong to us to go ahead and make our show and take money/tax credit from a state that is taking this stance on the abortion issue," Morano wrote on Instagram. "We just couldn’t do it."

Georgia became the fourth US state this year to make abortion illegal as soon as a foetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

The Power isn't the only project to pull out of the state as a result of the ban.

On Tuesday, Time magazine reported that shooting in Georgia for feature film Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar by Bridesmaids dream-team Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo has also been cancelled.

Morano and Wiig join a growing number of Hollywood heavyweights, including Charmed star Alyssa Milano, calling for a boycott on the state's lucrative film industry.

92,000 people are employed in film in Georgia, according to Time magazine, and the industry created $9.5 billion in wealth last year.

“I think this is one of the ways where we know we can hit a state where it hurts,” Morano told Time
