Amazon's Lord of the Rings series gets a second season before the first even airs

From Digital Spy

Amazon clearly has a lot riding on its upcoming Lord of the Rings series. It might not have released its first season yet, but it's already coming back for a second.

The big-budget show, which still doesn't have a name, will map out its second season once filming on the first two episodes of season one is finished in New Zealand, Deadline reports.

Although it's not started shooting yet and they're planning a four-to-five-month hiatus midway through the first season, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are currently in pre-production. Just don't expect it anytime soon.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch star Will Poulter's hero Beldor, Game of Thrones' Joseph Mawle's villain and Markella Kavenagh's Tyra are among the cast, although their character names are only rumoured for now.

Former Hollyoaks star Maxim Baldry also recently signed up, but it's unclear who he will play. It will apparently be a significant role, however.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona will direct the first two episodes, while Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman is a consulting producer.

We don't know much at all about the plot just yet, other than that it will be set before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring and during the Second Age.

The Lord of the Rings series will air on Amazon Prime (just not for quite a while).
