American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace has got an official UK air date.

Like its predecessor American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson, the new series has been picked up by the BBC.

The broadcaster confirmed that the drama, which focuses on the shooting of fashion designer Versace, starts on BBC Two on Wednesday, February 28 at 9pm.

The series has already been broadcast in the US on channel FX.

As well as the shooting, the series also documents the hunt for serial killer Andrew Cunanan – the man behind the murder.

Penelope Cruz stars as Versace’s sister Donatella and previously revealed she had received her real-life counterpart’s blessing.

She told Porter: I said to Donatella, 'This is keeping me up at night because it's such a big responsibility to play someone who's not only alive, but someone I respect so much.'"

"And she told me, 'If somebody's going to do it, I'm happy that it's you.'

"Her words gave me the freedom to do this. I think she could hear in my voice that everything was going to be done from a place of respect."
