Note: The following article includes discussion of weight which some readers may wish to avoid.

American Crime Story star Sarah Paulson has opened up about regretting wearing a fat suit for her role in the upcoming third instalment in the anthological series, Impeachment.

Focused on the scandal which surrounded former US President Bill Clinton and his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky in the '90s, the 10-part series sees Paulson take on the role of Linda Tripp, the former civil servant who revealed the affair through recorded phone conversations with Lewinsky.

The real Tripp had a very different physique than Paulson, and while the actress initially intended to gain weight for the role, she ultimately opted to wear a fat suit costume and makeup.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, the actress admitted her regrets over this decision, explaining how she came to realise how "harmful" it can be.

"It's very hard for me to talk about this without feeling like I'm making excuses," said Paulson. "There's a lot of controversy around actors and fat suits, and I think that controversy is a legitimate one.

"I think fatphobia is real. I think to pretend otherwise causes further harm. And it is a very important conversation to be had.

"But that entire responsibility I don't think falls on the actor for choosing to do something that is arguably – and I'm talking about from the inside out — the challenge of a lifetime," continued the actress.

"I do think to imagine that the only thing any actor called upon to play this part would have to offer is their physical self is a real reduction of the offering the actor has to make. I would like to believe that there is something in my being that makes me right to play this part. And that the magic of hair and makeup departments and costumers and cinematographers that has been part of moviemaking, and suspension of [dis]belief, since the invention of cinema. Was I supposed to say no [to the part]? This is the question."

Paulson then went on to add that she "regrets" not taking into consideration the harm wearing a fat suit could cause prior to her decision.

"I also know it's a privileged place to be sitting and thinking about it and reflecting on it, having already gotten to do it, and having had an opportunity that someone else didn't have," she told the publication.

"You can only learn what you learn when you learn it. Should I have known? Abso-f**king-lutely. But I do now. And I wouldn't make the same choice going forward."

American Crime Story: Impeachment, produced of course by Ryan Murphy, also stars Clive Owen as Clinton, Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky, The Sopranos' Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton and The Lion King's Billy Eichner as Matt Drudge, while Marvel star Cobie Smulders will play Ann Coulter, taking over from GLOW's Betty Gilpin.

While no UK broadcaster or streaming service has yet been named for the show, since Disney+ was recently named the new home for American Horror Story, we can expect Impeachment to land there as well shortly.

American Crime Story: Impeachment starts September 7 on FX in the US where episodes will be available the next day on Hulu.
