American fast food chain Wendy's is set to open in Glasgow city centre.

Glasgow City Council has received an application from Wendy's to open its first Scottish branch located at 139 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow. Nine planning application documents have been submitted, including plans to add their Wendy's signage to the entrance doors of the B-listed building and have a 70-inch Samsung display screen mounted behind the existing window.

The chain, which is the world's third largest hamburger fast-food brand, previously operated in the UK between the late 1970s and 1990s, before returning in 2021. The restaurant, which will be its first ever in Scotland, will extend to two floors, basement and ground level. Designs show plans for dining areas, order kiosks, drinks stations and service points, as well as staff and storage rooms.

The building, which was previously occupied by Co-op and Bargain Store, was originally designed by architect John Keppie in 1904 as part of the Edwardian Baroque era and proposals say the project would "honour the building's historical identity while providing a modern dining experience".

A decision is expected to be made on the plans by Friday, January 17.
