How American Horror Story's huge crossover could work

From Digital Spy

American Horror Story fans have been waiting for the Murder House and Coven crossover since creator Ryan Murphy first teased it in 2016.

"We are going to do a season that's a crossover between Murder House and Coven together, which is very bizarre. There will be characters from Murder House and characters from Coven together. I've [already] started going to actors from both of the seasons," he explained.

Initially we thought we might have to wait until the already-commissioned season nine, before Murphy dropped the bombshell that the highly anticipated crossover will actually happen in this year's season eight.

Since then, Emma Roberts has confirmed that she will be reprising her Coven role as bitchy Hollywood witch Madison Montgomery in season eight, despite being killed off twice during that season after being strangled to death by Kyle (Evan Peters) for not bringing Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) back to life.

Madison's appearance in season eight could also confirm a long-held fan theory and provide us with a direct link between Murder House and Coven.

The character shares the same surname as "surgeon to the stars" Charles Montgomery (Matt Ross) and his wife Rose (Lily Rabe), the original owners of the Murder House. Charles went too far when he brought their son Thaddeus back to life after he was dismembered, sewing the body parts back together with a few animal pieces, leading to Rose shooting Charles and then herself.

In Coven, Madison successfully revived Kyle after he was torn to pieces in a bus accident, leading fans to believe that her necromancy skills – coupled with the surname – mean that Madison is a direct descendant of Charles. It might have to be extended family, though, as we didn't see the Montgomerys have any children other than Thaddeus – and we doubt he had any chance to have children, given he was still in the basement in Murder House.

Charles has since been seen in Hotel when he performed an abortion for The Countess (Lady Gaga), so it's likely that season eight could see him appear again, along with his wife Rose. The ghosts in Murder House can only leave the premises on Halloween – so it could either be in an episode set at Halloween, or the witches from Coven might have cause to drop by the house.

At the end of Coven, Cordelia Foxx (Sarah Paulson) became the new Supreme, revealing the existence of the Coven to the world with Zoe and Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) the main surviving witches and Kyle as their faithful butler. Queenie was killed off in Hotel after she visited the Hotel Cortez and was stabbed by James March (Peters), so if she was seen again in season eight, she'd need a resurrection or will appear as a ghost.

But why would they have need to come into contact with the Murder House? We think the answer lies in the final scene of Murder House.

To recap, during the first season, Vivien (Connie Britton) is raped by the "Rubber Man" which we later learn is Tate, leading to Vivien being pregnant with twins from two different fathers (the other being her husband Ben).

It turns out that if a ghost is the father of a living son, that child will become the Antichrist, naturally, and later in the season, Vivien dies during childbirth along with one of the twins, unfortunately the good one. Ben is later killed by one of the Murder House ghosts, leaving the surviving twin in the care of Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange).

The final scene of Murder House took place three years later and we discovered that the surviving child, looking a lot like a younger Tate, has murdered his nanny and Constance is left wondering "what am I gonna do with you?".

We know that season eight takes place in late 2019 and if we consider Murder House to be set in the year it was released (2011), that would make the Antichrist around eight years old, although who's to say he would conform to human ageing? The scope is there for season eight to age up the Antichrist and have the witches of Coven attempt to stop him (or side with him) as he brings about the apocalypse.

After all, Murphy has been promising that season eight has a "very high concept" and is something "unlike anything we've done" with a "huge thing that happens in episode five".

And you can't get bigger than the apocalypse, right?

Plus if it leads to the brilliant Jessica Lange returning to the series to reprise her role as Constance, we say bring on the apocalypse.

American Horror Story returns to Fox in the UK and FX in the US later this year.
