She joins a cast that includes Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson, who are playing "star-crossed lovers" (and also creepy clowns). Frances Conroy, Lena Dunham and Mare Winningham are also on board.

The latest season of American Horror Story has been called an explicit reaction to Donald Trump's presidency.

"The first 10 minutes of the season, this season, takes place in a very eerie, macabre way on election night," Murphy said. "And there's something terrible that happens in the lives of our characters on election night as they're watching it all go down."

American Horror Story: Cult – which has been billed as "a horror story upon a horror story" – will return to FX in the US on September 5 and to FOX on September 8 in the UK.
