Fans of American Horror Story believe they have cracked the season 8 title.

Ryan Murphy's anthology series will be returning later this year, but details have been sparse at present.

It has now emerged that the phrase "American Horror Story: Radioactive" was trademarked earlier this month by Twentieth Century Fox – which produces and distributes the show. So has the title been prematurely leaked?

Murphy previously teased the eighth season by suggesting that it could take place in the future, which is intriguing to say the least.

"All I'll say about it is I want to go to the future – still topical, but the future, which I've never done," he said earlier this year.

"I pitched it to [FX CEO] John Landgraf... and he loved it, but he's asked me not to say what it is.

"I told him and he fell out of his chair with joy. I think people will like it. It's different from what we've done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I've done on that show."

Murphy recently confirmed that he has signed a huge deal with Netflix – but don't worry: the future of American Horror Story is safe on FX despite the producer's impending exit.

American Horror Story airs on FX in the US and FOX in the UK.
